...one fish, two fish, red fish...

Fishing in Alaska was very cool. We started out on Quartz Creek which was full of Sockeye salmon (reds). But they were all spawned out and decaying by this point, so we went for the trout.

Next on the fishing tour, we canoed the Swanson. Dave and Becky had a fish-off. Becky was using this little dinky fishing pole while Dave was casting his fly rod in beautiful arching motions. Who do you think won?

Dave: 5
Becky: 16 (at least)

We kept fishing the big rivers in hopes of snagging some salmon. Brady was the die-hard salmon fisherman this trip. We spent time on the Kenai, but we kept getting skunked. The reds and kings had already come through and the silvers were spotty. Instead, Brady caught some little guys on the Kasilof.

We hiked into Crescent Lake and tried our fishing skills there. A rowboat was supplied which made fishing very fun. The lake was so clear you could see the fish swim up and bite your fly. We weren't having amazing luck, so didn't fish that much. Later we found out that Crescent Lake is famous for Grayling and we wished we would've tried a little harder. But at least we didn't get skunked!

(Me dropping my fish repeatedly. Don't worry, he survived.)

These grayling were the wiggliest fish I've ever caught. I don't know how Dave held his with one hand (maybe cause it was smaller). And very beautiful, don't you think? They look like they emigrated from Bermuda.

Our last trout fish-off took place on another section of Quartz Creek. I finally surpassed Dave and got the first, biggest, and most! That's because I was the only one to catch anything :) Was it luck or my increased skillz? Trust me, it's my skillz.

Day 11 and still no good salmon. Brady got greedy/frustrated and snagged an almost dead red in the creek. You gonna eat that Brady?

Brady: 1 decaying red

As it turns out, Lucy caught the biggest fish of the trip. Way to go Lucy!

Score=
Lucy: 1 monster

P.S. Brady and Lucy stayed on the peninsula our last two days while Dave and I headed north. They claim they caught some nice, big, salmon. But we haven't seen any pics to prove it. Wait for the results at  bradyandlucy.blogspot.com.

...it's a b-b-b-bear!

Dave and I saw 14 bears while in Alaska. 14! We saw a mixture of grizzlies, black bears, males, sows, cubs, and one teddy. My favorite was a sow that was snorkeling for fish to feed her two cubs. All the bear sightings made us very watchful while hiking and camping, but we saw them all from the road or by boat which was nice.
